Brother PT-6 vs PT-D220: a listed replacement, not an identical machine

The Brother PT-6 and PT-D220 share a useful starting point: both are keyboard-first P-touch machines for narrow labels. Brother’s 2024 replacement-model list names PT-D220 for PT-6, but “replacement” is not a promise of identical tape, power, display, package contents or feel. The PT-6 is discontinued; decide whether you are reusing a particular machine or choosing equipment for a new routine.

First separate the media

The exact PT-6 U.S. product page lists TZe tape at 3.5, 6, 9 and 12 mm. Brother’s TC10 and TC20Z1 tape pages separately name PT-6 as compatible with the 12 mm TC10 and 9 mm TC20Z1. Keep those cassette records distinct. The PT-D220 assessment supports standard TZe tapes up to 12 mm; it is not a substitute for a legacy TC cassette. If you have a drawer of refills, start with the printed code rather than width or color.

Then compare the information each listing actually provides

For PT-6, Brother confirms a QWERTY keyboard, a two-line maximum and a label-length setting. The exact product page’s “Standard Memory 15” has no unit, and the sources here do not settle its screen, print height, power arrangement, cutter or phone/computer connection. Do not fill those gaps with another model’s facts. If it is an existing PT-6, test the machine and confirm its exact media before relying on it.

The PT-D220 is a current-reference option with its own fuller profile: a 15-character one-line display, six AA batteries, a separately available AC adapter, manual cutter and a documented 9 mm maximum print height. It still stops at 12 mm TZe tape, so a buyer seeking wider output should compare another model instead. These PT-D220 details explain what is better documented about that model; they do not prove how the PT-6 is powered or cut.

Choose the one that fits your actual task

Keep the PT-6 in consideration when the exact working unit and refill are already known, you prefer QWERTY typing, and a two-line label no wider than 12 mm is enough. Choose PT-D220 when you want a currently documented household option with a known screen, power route and cut method. If you require a phone app, computer design, automatic cutting, more print height or a wider cassette, use those as must-have filters and move to a model whose exact operating plan confirms them.

A manufacturer's replacement recommendation helps narrow a comparison, but it does not make used machines interchangeable. Check the exact model marking, cassette code and included accessories on the individual offer before placing an order.

Choose around the labels you actually have to make.
