Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Are 18 or 24 mm original Brother TZ cassettes essential, rather than wide TZe?
The original PT-580C guide identifies TZ widths through 24 mm. The exact current product page only lists TZe through 12 mm, so a wide-TZ need must not be translated into wide-TZe compatibility.
Explore this need in the finder →Would a period serial-connected computer route fit your workflow, or is USB essential?
The historical brochure documents Windows 95 software and a serial cable. The PT-580C does not qualify for a modern USB requirement; current operating-system support is unknown.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you want a stand-alone label layout system with prepared formats, not a phone-app requirement?
The brochure lists 34 auto-format templates and a built-in QWERTY keyboard. The exact sources do not document a phone app; an essential phone-app need is not met.
Explore this need in the finder →A broad-feature label and stamp system from an earlier PC era
The Brother P-touch PT-580C is not a small modern pocket labeler. Brother’s exact U.S. listing calls it discontinued, and the original brochure presents a tabletop electronic label-and-stamp creation system with a large alphanumeric keyboard. It suits an owner or used-unit shopper who values on-device design, broad older tape options, multi-color labels, or stamp-making more than current software support. Its 8.5-by-8.5-inch footprint and 2.2-pound weight also make it a desk machine, not something to carry in a pocket.
Two tape routes—do not collapse them into one width range
The original PT-580C user guide specifies Brother TZ cassettes in 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 mm widths. It gives width-specific line limits: two lines on 6 mm, three on 9 and 12 mm, and up to five on 18 and 24 mm. The guide’s one-metre label-length limit and the machine’s broad format controls make those wider tapes useful for room labels, equipment markings, and larger text arrangements.
Brother’s current U.S. product page instead lists TZe tape at 3.5, 6, 9, and 12 mm, along with a two-line maximum. Brother’s tape-compatibility help page lists the PT-580C among models that can use TZe in place of TZ, so TZe is a documented separate route; that help page does not erase the product page’s 12 mm TZe ceiling. If 18 or 24 mm tape matters, treat it as the original TZ plan, not as a promise of wide TZe support. Matching a cartridge family and width to the exact machine is more important here than shopping by width alone.
Designed locally, with a period computer option
The 63-key alpha/numeric keyboard, readable WYSIWYG display, six character sizes, three built-in fonts, 34 auto-format layouts, and 3,400-character memory support a surprisingly involved standalone workflow. The brochure also lists bar-code, numbering, repeat-print, framing, vertical and mirror features. Brother’s manual and brochure describe a serial-connected PC workflow using older P-touch software; the original brochure names Windows 95 software and an included serial cable. That is a legacy accessory and host route. The checked sources do not establish USB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or phone-app design, and the old software should not be assumed to run on a current computer just because an adapter can physically change a port.
There is more than monochrome text, but not unrestricted color printing. Brother describes black, blue, and red printing on white tape and a separate stamp workflow using special stamp tape and reusable pads. This can be helpful for color-coded notices or making a simple stamp. It is not the same as a contemporary full-color photo printer, and the extra supplies are part of the operating setup.
What ownership involves
Brother’s guide specifies six AA alkaline batteries, with an optional AD-30 AC adapter; the brochure describes six AA cells and one 12 mm TZ cassette in the original package. Those were historical package contents, not a promise about any second-hand listing. Confirm whether a used PT-580C includes its serial cable, software media, adapter, tape cassette, and stamp parts if you need them. Its manual cutter lever also means you finish a print by hand rather than relying on automatic cutting.
Before paying for a used unit, ask for a power-on and sample-print demonstration, check that the screen and keypad respond, and inspect the tape path and cutter. Then confirm that the exact cartridge is Brother TZ or the separately documented TZe width you intend to use. A dead display, missing cable, or scarce cassette can change the value of this older system more than a long feature list does. Brother marks it discontinued; supply availability and current computer compatibility are not established by the historical brochure.
Who should choose something else?
If you require wide TZe tape, automatic cutting, a USB or wireless workflow, phone-based design, or a current support path, the cited PT-580C documentation does not establish those needs. Treat them as unconfirmed rather than assuming that an old serial connection or a seller’s listing supplies them. For a present-day Brother option, the PT-D610BT is a different, current-reference family with its own keyboard, app/computer routes, tape limits, and purchase configuration; it does not recreate the PT-580C’s stamp system or old serial workflow. The PT-580C is most defensible as a carefully checked legacy machine for someone who will use the documented TZ route or local layout controls. Its unusually broad feature set is real, but it asks the owner to work around an older interface and a discontinued supply ecosystem.

Key details at a glance
| Full-color output | No |
|---|---|
| Print process | thermal transfer |
| Maximum tape width | 12 mm |
| Compatible cassette | Two different ceilings matter. Brother’s current exact U.S. product page lists TZe widths 3.5/6/9/12 mm. Brother’s original PT-580C guide says use original TZ and lists 6/9/12/18/24 mm; Brother’s official compatibility help includes PT580C among models where TZe can replace TZ, but does not state that wide TZe cassettes work. This model’s `max_tape_width_mm` and `max_tze_tape_width_mm` fields are limited to the exact page’s TZe ceiling for the ordinary 18/24 mm TZe questionnaire; the distinct legacy-TZ plan owns the 24 mm limit. |
| Built-in templates | 34 |
| Display type | LCD |
| Maximum lines per label | 5 |
| Line-count note | The indexed text for the exact Brother guide gives TZ width-specific maxima: 2 lines at 6 mm; 3 at 9/12 mm; 5 at 18/24 mm. Brother’s current page’s separate TZe specification says a two-line maximum. See the two operating plans; do not apply a flat five-line limit to TZe. |
| On-device frames | 20 |
| On-device symbols | 126 |
| Power choices | The exact brochure lists six included AA cells in the original package; the exact Brother guide identifies AA alkaline cells and an optional AD-30. A used offer’s contents and condition are not established. |
| Body dimensions | The exact brochure lists 8.5 × 8.5 × 2.7 inches and 2.2 lb without batteries. The two 8.5-inch floor dimensions are equal; the brochure does not name the axes, so measure a tight opening before placing it. |
| Tape cutting | Exact indexed PT-580C guide contents identify a tape cutter lever; this is manual cutting rather than an automatic cutter. The direct manual PDF bytes remain unavailable. |
| What the base package supplies | The original brochure lists a 12 mm TZ cassette, six AA batteries, Windows 95 software and serial cable for the original package. Brother marks the model discontinued; these old box contents are not guaranteed in a used offer. |
| Letter-key arrangement | qwerty |
| Specialist media limits | The exact brochure describes black/blue/red output on white tape and a stamp-tape / reusable-pad route. Stamp tape is a separate specialized medium, not a standard TZ/TZe label cassette. The PT-580C is not a full-color photo printer. |
| Built-in type styles | ['normal', 'outline', 'shadow', 'bold', 'solid', 'outline_and_shadow', 'italic', 'italic_outline', 'italic_outline_and_shadow', 'italic_shadow', 'italic_bold', 'italic_solid', 'horizontal', 'italic_horizontal'] |
