Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you want 24 mm TZe and computer-made labels from the same handheld?
PT-H500LI supports TZe through 24 mm and a USB connection to P-touch Editor; it does not provide a confirmed phone-app or Wi-Fi route.
Explore this need in the finder →Would automatic cuts save steps in a mixed handheld and USB workflow?
The PT-H500LI includes an automatic cutter, plus on-device QWERTY entry and the documented USB Editor route.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need wireless phone printing as well as wide TZe?
H500LI reaches 24 mm and USB computer design, but phone-app and wireless printing are not documented. If either is essential, do not count it as a fit.
Explore this need in the finder →The Brother P-touch PT-H500LI is a wide-format handheld label maker that bridges two routines: typing at a physical QWERTY keypad and designing from a computer over USB. It accepts standard Brother TZe tape up to 24 mm, includes a rechargeable Li-ion battery and AC adapter, and has an automatic cutter. Compared with the PT-H300, it can print wider, connect to P-touch Editor and finish labels automatically; compared with a desktop printer, it keeps a full on-device keyboard and battery option.
A handheld that can also take computer jobs
When working away from a desk, the H500LI behaves like a substantial keypad label maker. Brother's User's Guide describes a backlit graphical display, a QWERTY keyboard, one-touch formatting controls, built-in templates and block layouts, plus barcode entry. It can save frequently used labels on the device. The user guide says file memory stores up to 50 labels, while the current web specification table gives 99 as standard memory; that conflict is left unresolved rather than used as a selling point. The display is also described differently across the sources: the guide specifies 16 characters across two text lines plus a guidance area, while the web table lists three lines. Check the physical preview with a real cassette before relying on a long layout.
The computer route is via the included USB cable and Brother P-touch Editor. Brother's product page lists software and drivers for Windows on a CD-ROM and a Mac download; the page says database printing and cloud template downloading are Windows-only. This is useful for arranging custom logos, TrueType fonts or batches at a laptop, then keeping the same handheld available for short on-device labels. It is not a Wi-Fi or phone-app printer: USB computer creation is the confirmed connected route. Because its manual and supplied software are from an older generation, check Brother's current driver and operating-system support for the computer you plan to use before counting on it.
24 mm TZe and an automatic cutter change the job
The H500LI reaches 24 mm TZe, versus 18 mm for the PT-H300 and 12 mm for compact handhelds such as the PT-H110. Its manual specifies a maximum print height of 18 mm when using the 24 mm cassette, with up to seven lines on that width; narrower tape permits fewer lines. This added width is useful when an equipment ID needs a second line, a larger type size or more room for a barcode, but it does not turn the labeler into a full-width sign printer. Cassette width and printable area are different measures, and a sample layout remains the best way to confirm the type size you need.
The built-in automatic cutter is a meaningful advantage for a run of labels: it can separate output without manually operating a cutter lever on every piece. The manual offers large margin, small margin, chain, no-cut and special-tape cut settings, so automatic cutting does not mean every job should use the same cut behavior. Margins and feed leaders still consume tape, especially on short labels. Choose the correct mode for the cassette, keep the cutter area clean as the guide directs, and inspect the first result before printing a complete set.
What the H500LI package includes
The exact H500LI package listed by Brother includes one 24 mm by 4 m black-on-white TZe starter cassette, the rechargeable BA-E001 Li-ion battery, AD-E001 AC adapter, USB cable, wrist strap, user's guide, and P-touch Editor software/drivers (Windows CD; Mac download). The base H500LI therefore starts with both portable battery power and desk adapter power. The H500LI's model suffix matters: the power kit should not be inferred from a generic PT-H500 listing or a used-unit photograph.
The manual also describes operation using six AA alkaline or Ni-MH batteries, but Brother's PT-H500LI box list does not include them. If AA operation is important, the power route and required battery tray need to be checked against the exact accessory instructions; the included Li-ion and AC setup is the straightforward documented H500LI package. Brother's product page and manual differ slightly in body depth and height (about 9.7 by 3.5 inches on the web page versus 9.6 by 3.6 in the guide), so allow a little extra clearance rather than measuring a tight shelf to the tenth of an inch. The listed body width is about 4.8 inches.
Choose the workflow, not just the wider cassette
The PT-H500LI is a strong fit when the same person alternates between hand-entered labels and a computer layout, needs TZe tape through 24 mm, and wants a rechargeable portable package with automatic cuts. It is more self-sufficient than the PT-P710BT CUBE Plus because it has its own QWERTY keyboard and screen; the P710BT instead depends on a phone app for its normal label-design route, adds Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct capabilities, and also supports USB design. If a stationary QWERTY desktop with Wi-Fi, phone access or a larger feature set is more useful, compare the PT-D610BT. The PT-H300 remains the narrower, manual-cut handheld choice when 18 mm is enough and computer editing is unnecessary.
TZe cassettes include laminated and specialty materials, but a family's stated durability is not a guarantee on a particular substrate, curve, temperature or cleaning routine. Confirm the exact tape suffix and its intended application, then test adhesion on the actual surface. The H500LI cannot meet a requirement for a phone app or wireless printing simply because the computer software is connected; USB, phone and network are separate paths. At purchase, verify the model suffix, included battery/adapter and cassette contents, and current software support. Its extra width and cutter pay off when those features fit the work; otherwise a simpler handheld or a phone-first CUBE may avoid paying attention to functions that will not be used.
