Brother PT-2300 vs PT-2310: compare the case, media and old software

The PT-2300 and PT-2310 are discontinued Brother P-touch desktop labelers with substantially overlapping documented operation. Both have a QWERTY keyboard, USB computer connection, automatic full cutter and an older Brother TZ tape route up to 24 mm. The practical choice is the exact suffix, cassette evidence and original package, rather than a presumed change in print quality or chassis.

What stays the same

The shared Brother User’s Guide states that the PT-2300 and PT-2310 have the same functions. It describes a 51-key QWERTY keyboard, 10-character by two-line LCD, USB port, four built-in fonts, memory for about 300 characters, and up to six lines depending on tape width. The model-specific support tables list 180 dpi, 10 mm per second, 15.8 mm maximum print height, eight AA alkaline batteries or an optional AD-60 AC adapter, and the same small-desktop dimensions. The guide lists only Brother TZ cassettes at 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 mm, with two lines on the narrow widths and six on 18/24 mm.

These details describe an early computer-capable machine, not a current software promise. Both require a USB cable sold separately for a computer connection; Brother’s guide documents the original P-touch Editor and printer-driver setup on systems such as Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP. The current support pages and product pages retain different media/line claims: the PT-2300 and PT-2310 pages list TZe at 3.5–12 mm, while the older support tables differ on whether TZe is named and combine media widths differently. Keep TZe at the newer product-page 12 mm ceiling; do not extend it to 24 mm because original TZ reaches that width. Verify cassette codes and software compatibility before selecting either as a dependable daily system.

Where the exact suffix matters

Exact modelBrother’s original brochure listDocumented distinction
PT-2300Eight AA batteries, CD-ROM, tape separator, 12 mm black-on-white TZ tape and 24 mm black-on-clear TZ tapeNo carrying case is listed; its support spec says no case included.
PT-2310Protective case, eight AA batteries, CD-ROM, tape separator and the same two cassette sizesIts exact support spec lists the case. The shared guide says the PT-2310 includes an extra cassette, but both brochures list two tapes, so the historical cassette-count difference is unresolved.

The PT-2310’s current product page also advertises up to 14 barcode kinds, while its exact support table says barcodes are not available as a stand-alone machine function. Brother’s brochure presents barcodes in the PC mode. Use that claim only as a computer-software route and verify the required driver; do not assume local keyboard entry adds barcode support. Neither suffix gives you a phone app or wireless connection.

Choose the box that matches your plan

For an existing PT-2300, the lower-uncertainty decision is whether its original TZ setup, keyboard and automatic cutter solve the job and whether its USB-era software is still usable with your computer. The PT-2310 is worth distinguishing when the case is present and wanted, or when its exact media instructions match a cassette you already use. The brochure describes an original kit, not the contents of a secondhand listing. Ask for a photo of the model label, tape compartment, adapter and case; check the cutter, printhead and battery compartment before relying on it.

If the case has vanished, the model numbers do not imply a more capable PT-2310 engine. If you need a known current TZe route, phone design, app connectivity or today’s operating-system support, compare a current model such as the PT-D610BT on its own manual and feature set. A newer model may solve those requirements but will not make old TZ cassettes interchangeable. Select the cassette family first, then the suffix and package.

Read the individual PT-2300 review and PT-2310 review for separate media and ownership caveats.
