Brother ST1150 vs ST1150DX: compare the case and cassette package

The Brother ST1150 and ST1150DX are both discontinued Stanley-branded P-touch label makers in the official U.S. catalogue. The suffix changes the original kit more than the documented printing job: Brother’s exact pages give both models the same QWERTY, laminated-tape, thermal-transfer and 12 mm maximum profile. Their brochures identify the difference that matters when comparing surviving units.

What the original packages add

Catalogue modelOriginal brochure contentsPractical distinction
ST1150Labeler, six AAA batteries and one tape cassetteA self-contained keyboard tool; no carrying case is listed.
ST1150DXLabeler, carrying case, six AAA batteries and two tape cassettesUseful only if the case and extra cassette are present and wanted.

Brother’s parts reference separately identifies the DX carrying case and cassette pad. That supports a package distinction, not an extra print-width or connectivity capability. Both brochures give the machine itself as 6.1 × 5.1 × 2.5 inches and 0.9 pounds; allow more room for the DX case. An old brochure describes the original box, not the pieces included in a second-hand sale.

Choose by the work, not the suffix

For either model, expect local QWERTY typing, an eight-character single-row display and text up to 55 characters. The shared guide allows two lines only on 9 mm or 12 mm tape, and the two-line print uses Size 1. Brother’s current product pages list TZe tape through 12 mm, while the model-specific guide names Stanley STZ or Brother TZ tape at 6, 9 and 12 mm. The conservative consensus is 6–12 mm; the guide does not settle the current page’s 3.5 mm listing. Check the cassette code before stocking a used unit.

The guide specifies six AAA alkaline batteries or the optional Brother AD-30 adapter. Neither brochure lists the adapter as an included item. The DX is the better package only when its case and second cassette add value; the base ST1150 is simpler if those extras are unnecessary. Choose a different, independently documented model if you need 18 mm media, phone composition, an auto-cutter or a measured print height.

See the individual ST1150 review and ST1150DX review for the exact media and used-unit checks.
